Making of The Coliseum
http://www.3dm3.com/features/133/head.jpg
References
Hi guys! I was looking for a beautiful construction, then I found the Coliseum. I got some references but it was hard to extract the details from them. The references available on the web are not good enough, most of them are low resolution. But with patience everything is possible!
http://www.3dm3.com/features/133/01.jpg
Modeling
Almost the whole scene was modeled with splines and extrudes. For some objects I used poly modeling. I used splines because they are simpler to get the shape of the object, like the walls of the coliseum. If I had used poly modeling to make the shapes I would have wasted too much time. Here are some examples:
http://www.3dm3.com/features/133/03.jpghttp://www.3dm3.com/features/133/04.jpg
http://www.3dm3.com/features/133/05.jpg
Textures
For the textures i combined procedural with painted maps. I used this technique in almost the whole scene. To make the grass I combined displacement with vray fur, and doing it i got a nice tangled look for the grass. In the images shown below there is only a displacement map, in the final render they are combined. For the trees i used a simple map with an alpha channel for the leaves and for the trunk I used a wood map duplicated many times.
http://www.3dm3.com/features/133/06.jpg
http://www.3dm3.com/features/133/07.jpg
http://www.3dm3.com/features/133/08.jpg
Lightning
The light was a very complicated process. I tried many times to get a good result but the render was too slow. I did many light passes to get the result i was looking for. I used many different colors. For the envirovment i used a combination of brown with red. It gives a realistic look to the envirovment(normaly we find it in city skies). For the windows i used many area lights, To the right side of coliseum i used a spot light and to create shadows in the grass, two white area lights.
http://www.3dm3.com/features/133/09.jpg
Rendering
For the render I used vray 1.5. I turned on irradiance map like primary bounces, and light cache for secondary bounces. For the color mapping i used HSV Exponential. The parameters are listed in the pictures below.
http://www.3dm3.com/features/133/10.jpg
And camera settings are shown on the picture below:
http://www.3dm3.com/features/133/11.jpg
Post Production
I rendered in two layers, the first was the environment with the grass, the trees and the floor. The second was the coliseum. I used Photoshop to make the composition, the background and the color correction.
http://www.3dm3.com/features/133/12.jpghttp://www.3dm3.com/features/133/13.jpg
And the final image see below:

درس الـــــ New World بواسطة الماكس و الفوتوشوب

Click here to view big image (http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/planet_red.tif)
Thistutorial is intended for those artists who are going to place a planet on theforeground of their new artwork. To implement this tutorial I use a part of thelesson you have possibly seen on the www.3dm3.com (http://www.3dm3.com/)
Createa scene in 3D MAX.
Go to Geometrya Geosphere and create a new spherewith the radius equal to 132 (Actuallyit doesn't matter what radius you are going to use).
Name the sphere as "Planet”.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image001.jpg
3. Planetmaterial.
CreatePhong material.
Set basicparameters as follows:
Specular level -- 500
Glossiness -- 35
Soften -- 0,1
CreateFallout map for Diffuse Color. Set Falloff Type to “Shadow/Light”. Falloff will contain two maps – Composite and RGB Tint.
I usuallyuse a hard bump texture or Noise map for the RGB Tint which makes directlyreflected light unevenly distributed on the planet surface. But you can try your own technique.
I assembleComposite map from two parts: RGB Tint is responsible for thevisual depth of the shade.
Mix provides reflection color gamut.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image002.jpg
For Specular Color map I use thesame RGB Tint material as in Falloff.
Set to Specular the map that you areplanning to use as a Self-Illumination map, if you want to create cities on thesurface of the planet of course. If not leave Specular map slot empty.
And the last but still veryimportant map – Self-Illumination. Create Falloff map again with two submaps –Falloff map and a map which would illuminate your cities (if you have any) onthe darks side of the planet. And of course set Falloff Type to “Shadow/Light”.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image004.jpg
For the inner Falloff assign thesame map as for the previous map. But use “Perpendicular/Parallel” as a FalloutType. Then light transition on the surface of the planet will not be so sharpin the area of light and shadow division comparatively with the clouds.
And at last select any map with a good relief for the Bump. Preferably bump map should accentuate main contoursof the texture you use as a color (Diffuse) map. Set Bump amount 30.
You can isnert the same map toDisplacement previously converted color texture to grayscale with parameter 1.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image006.jpg
If you made everything correctly youshould have something like that:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image008.jpg
5. Save the result to a tiff or psdformat file to have alpha channel mask created automatically. Name the file as“My World” for example.
6. Save the scene and close 3D MAX.Then start Photoshop.
7. Open recently created “My World”file.
8. Duplicate the only present Layer 1 and set“Screen” Blending Option. The layer will look like the next image:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image009.jpg
(http://www.3dm3.com/mag/cgchosen/no07_architecture/)
9. Continue. Select the area of the planet by Ctrl + “Left MouseButton” and create a new layer “Atmosphere”. Fill the selected area with acolor that has the next parameters:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image011.jpg
Got the following result:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image013.jpg
10. Setting Blending Options.
Creating A New World by Henry Pashkov
Open Blending Options window and set parametersof Inner Shadow, Outer Glow and Inner Glow as on the images below:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image015.jpg
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image017.jpg
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image019.jpg
Got the next result:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image021.jpg
11. Set «Atmosphere»parameters as follows:
Blending Mode –“Screen”
Opacity – 80%
12. Now yourplanet should look like…
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image023.jpg
13. Letscontinue with the most interesting procedure. Creating clouds.
Create anew layer and name it “Clouds”.
Remark2. I will take advantage of theready cloud texture previously found in the Internet. But such texture may becreated manually using space photos of clouds or using Terragen software togenerate an unique cloud map.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image025.jpg
So take preparedatmosphere map and cut the previously selected (using Ctrl+”Left Mouse Button”)area of the planet from the atmosphere map layer. You should have somethinglike that after:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image027.jpg
14. Apply Distort/Spherize filter to selected circle.
And enjoy resulting“bulged” clouds.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image029.jpg
15. Open Blending Options window and setparameters for Outer Glow and Inner Glow as on the following pictures:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image031.jpg
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image033.jpg
Got thenext picture look:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image035.jpg
Open Blending Options window again and set OuterGlow and Drop Shadow parameters:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image037.jpg
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image039.jpg
17. Set thenext parameters for the result “Atmosphere” layer:
Blending options – “Screen”
Opacity – 50%
Now ourplanet should look like following picture:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image041.jpg
18. And one important step more – planetaryshadow.
Select planet area using Ctrl+”Left Mouse Click”as earlier. Create a new layer “Shadow” and fill selected area with the Blackcolor. Then apply Blur\Gaissian Blur filter to the layer with Radius equal to0,6 or 0,7 parameter.
Remark 3. Bigger the radius is higher the Radiusparameter should be.
If everything has been done correctly than received“Shadow” layer placed over the ”Atmosphere” layer will look like the following:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image043.jpg
19. Move “Atmosphere” layer a little left and down(Move to the side opposite to the light source). You should receive somethinglike that:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image045.jpg
20. And the final planet image looks like:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image047.jpg
21. If you want your planet to have another planetarycolor (atmosphere color), than the only thing you need to do is to change BlendingOptions parameters for Outer Glow and Inner Glow of the “Atmosphere” layer. Andyour planet will have quite different look as shown on the image below:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/new_world/image048.jpg
Or like this:

I just wanna say "thanks" to my old PC: a Pentium 4 processor with a Radeon 9800pro and only 512 mb ram memory. For the realization I used 3ds max 7 and Vray Advanced 1.46. A great post-production process was possible with a Wacom Graphic Tablet. I have Intuos 2 A4 format.
Modeling
When you decide to realize an image like this, you have to know that the modeling part is the simplest.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/1.jpg
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/2.jpg
All the objects of the scene are modelled in Max with polygonal instruments. The coffee mug, the saucers, the glasses and the fluids were created with lathe tool and then converted to editable polys for texturing. The eggs are simple geospheres with a lot of subdivisions.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/3.jpg
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/4.jpg
The woman drawing is a simple editable spline converted to editable polys and then distorted with FFD 4x4x4 modifier. The table is a primitive cilinder converted and modified as editable polys.
Texturing
The scene is embeded in various complex vray materials. We'll begin from the simplest. My drawing is as diffuse and a texture created in Photoshop as bump (with value of 80).The coffee mug has a texture created in Photoshop (simulating porcelain) as diffuse, a clear gray color (R211, G211, B211) in Reflect slot and fresnel reflection activated.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/texture_drawing.jpg
The pills are a Multi/Sub-Object material with two Vray embedded materials ;both have Reflect slot with a gray near white color (R228, G228, B228) and fresnel reflection activated. The egg material has a texture created in Photoshop in diffuse channel, a dark gray (R59, G59, B59) in reflect slot (FR activated) and refl.glossiness at 0,7.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/egg.jpg
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/texture_egg.jpg
The water and the glass have very similar materials (see image below for Milk material too) except for IOR value; water has 1,335 while glass has 1,606.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/glass_material.jpg
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/milk_material.jpg
The teapot has a chromed material; diffuse at black, reflect slot at R228, G228, B228, fresnel reflection activated and max depth of reflection at 10.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/glass.jpg
Now complex materials are coming. The table is embeded in two materials. One with a texture realized in Photoshop in diffuse and bump slot (30 like bump value); reflect channel has a procedural map (Noise, with standard values) in its own slot.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/texture_table.jpg
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/texture2.jpg
The other one has diffuse at black, reflect at R176, G124, B74 with 0,85 as refl.glossiness and 3 as value of subdivision. Furthermore refract channel is black but its number of subdivision is 50. At last the Index Of Refraction is about 0,47.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/gold.jpg
Lighting
I believe lighting process is the most important of a project.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/scene.jpg
In this case watch the image below for the lights used.
There are three Vray lights with multiplier at 3, 3,5 and 4. All have “Store with Irradiance map” activated. For a great result I placed also a HDR image called “Kitchen” and downloadable from Paul Debevec web site (http://www.debevec.org/) with 0,5 multiplier.
Rendering
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/occlusion.jpg
The final resolution image (3048x2287) demanded about 5 hours of rendering.
Below there are Irradiance map and Antialiasing settings.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/render1.jpg
You can see render settings in the images below. Environment slot have HDR image of Debevec.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/render2.jpg
Post-processing & Depth of Field
This process is really important. An ordinary result could be improved a lot with an excellent use of post-processing software.
In this case I used Photoshop of Adobe. Computing depth of field of image (or animation) with rendering engine that's really problematic.
It's advisable to make it with internal 3ds max plugin. I used ZDepth. In my case I used values as: Z min 155 and Z max: 230.
Once rendered the depth map (see below), you have to import it in a compositing software (Photoshop ad example) and set it as alpha channel.
Afer done you can load the alpha map in Filter > Blur > Lens blur and you can modify various parameters to achieve good results.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/depth.jpg
Background is simply a bitmap image saturated and then blurred.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/cafe/background.jpg
With simple small brushes (with help of blending changes) I created some micro-details like scratches on table and coffee mug.
Important advice: it's very useful enhance or reduce Hue/Saturation and Brightness/Contrast settings. Try with various filters for achieve interesting results.

Cigarette smoke درس تصميم الدخان
For this tutorial I assume you got a fair bit of brain and experience with 3D Studio MAX.
Reset your scene and start by making a cone with radius1: 10, radius2: 150, Height: 800, Height segments: 80, Sides: 40 and mark the "Generate Mapping Coords" This will make the basic sharp of the smoke. It should look something like the cone on Fig01. If your smoke got another shape, just modify the setting so it fits.
The Cone got caps in the top and bottom, we don't want those, so add an edit mesh and cut them off.
And to be honest the shape doesn't look much like smoke, it have to be noisy, and more noisy in the top then the bottom, for this we well need the "Mesh Select" and soft selection. add the modifiere and select the first row of vertices from the top. Mark the "Use Soft Selection" and set the faloff to 750. remember the height of the cone was 800. so the vertices in the bottom is not affected.
Now with the "Mesh Select" in "Sub-Object" mode add a noise modifiere. set all the strenght values to 250 and the scale to 130. Because we use soft selection the noise is most affected in the top, just like we wanted. See Fig02.
We also want the smoke to be animated, so mark the "Animate Noise" and set the frequency to 0.05 since 0.25 is way too fast. Now its so slow 100 frames isn't enough, so scale it to 200 frames. The animation still doesn't look right, it just waves from side to side, and smoke usually comes from the bottom and goes up, lets fix that. In the noise modifiere go to "Sub Object" mode and go to frame 200 and press animate and move the gizmo about 800 units up, and go out of "Sub Object" mode. See Fig03.
But one cone isn't enough. Make 4 copies so you'll have 5 cones all in all. but they all look the same, just change the noise seed for the 4 new cones, so they all have a unique number. If you want to, you could also change some of the strenght values and the scale of the noise.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/smoke/tut_smoke_fig01.gifhttp://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/smoke/tut_smoke_fig02.gifhttp://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/smoke/tut_smoke_fig03.gifFig01Fig02Fig03
Now make a Camera and a lightsource with shadow mapped shadows perpendicular on the camera, and turn the viewport to shaded mode, and you should have something like this Fig04, maybe in another color.
Now we just need a material that looks like smoke. It have to be transparent in the top and more solid in the bottom. The edges of the smoke also have to be more solid then the center of the smoke.
Make a new material, and set the "Specular Level" and "Glossiness" to 0 since we don't want any highlights.
Under "Extended Parameters" set the "Type" to "additive" This means its adds the color to the background. So if you have a dark transparent material, it wouldn't show up because there isn't much to add. We can use this to make the center of the smoke dark, and thereby transparent.
So we want the center of the smoke dark, and the edges white. The Falloff material can do this, so add one in the "Diffuse" slot. This will make the faces with the normals pointing at the camera black, and the faces with normals perpendicular to the camera white. Adjust the curve so it looks like Fig05.
We also want the material to be more illuminated on the edge, so copy the Falloff map to the "Self-illumination" slot. And adjust the curve so it looks like Fig06.
Like I set it have to be more tranparent in the top then the bottom, so add a gradient map in the "Opacity" slot. set color1 to 0,0,0 color2 to 20,20,20 and color3 to 255,255,255. And under "coordinates" set tiling to U:0.9 and V:0.9 if you doesn't do this the very-top of the smoke will be white, since the gradient tiles a bit.
Now hit render.. And you should have something like the picture in the bottom of this tutorial.
If you don't like the result, you could always adjust the diffuse, self-ilumination and opacity map. to make it more or less transparent, or change the color, or...
ADVERTISE

Fig04
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/smoke/tut_smoke_fig05.jpeFig05http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/smoke/tut_smoke_fig06.jpeFig06
Tips:
Add a gradient in the diffuse falloff, and make the gradient go from yellow to white, so the smoke will be slighty yellow in the top, Simulating the nicotine in the smoke.
Its also possible to make a touch using this technique, just make the diffuse colors red/orange maybe in a noise map, and add some fractal noise to the the gradient opacity map.
Add a flex modifier before "Noise" and "Mesh Select" and animate the smoke, this will cause the top of the smoke to lag behind the bottom.

Explosion Tutorial درس تصميم انفجار
This tutorial explains how to make cool-looking explosions like these:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/explore2/exp1.jpg
However, the user must have a basic knowledge of MAX and some of its functions, like creating combustion gizmos, the video post basic functions, omni lights, etc.
Now, without further rambling...
1. Create a SphereGizmo anywhere in the scene. Just place it somewhere in a place where it can easily be found, like as shown below.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/explore2/gizmo1.jpg
2. Add a combustion to the SphereGizmo. The setting should be around:
Flame Type: Tendril
Flame Size: 20.0
The colors for the combustion are as follows:
Inner color:
R: 255
G: 248
B: 241
Hue: 37
Sat: 54
Value: 255
Outer color:
R: 255
G: 120
B: 30
Hue: 17
Sat: 225
Value: 225
Of course, there's nothing wrong with trying something different.
3. Make an omni light in the center of the combustion gizmo. Put some attentuation on it. This is the light that will *supposedly* light up the object you're....lighting up http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/explore2/smile.gif
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/explore2/light.jpg
4. Color said omni light orange.
5. Create a particle SuperSpray with the following settings and place it inside the center of the SphereGizmo.
Basic Parameters:
Off Axis: 90.0
Spread: 90.0
Off Plane: 0.0
Spread: 180.0
Particle Generation:
Use Rate: 20
Speed: 5.0
Variation: 50.0
Particle Size: 3.0
Particle Type:
Tetra
Rotation and Collision:
Set to "Direction of Travel/MBlur", and set it to 15.
Next, select said SuperSpray, right-click on it, go to Properties, and assign it an Object ID. Assign it any # you want, but for this exercise it will be 32. Then, go to the Material Editor, and create something that's totally glowing white, either using self-illumination or raytrace luminosity. Apply that material to the particle spray.
The particle spray should look something like this, if you advance the frames enough:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/explore2/particle1.jpg
6. Now for the hard part. Go to Rendering->Video Post. First of all (do this first), click on the blue thing:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/explore2/vp1.jpg
After you click, select "Perspective" from the list of viewports and press OK. Then, you will need to put a lens flare in the middle of the explosion. Click on "Add Image Filter Event", and add a lensflare:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/explore2/vp2.jpg
Setup the lensflare. You can either use a provided lens flare file made for explosions/quantum singularities/whatever, or you can use the AFTERFX3.lzf file pre-included with MAX, and red-shift the glows, red-and-orange-shift the manual secondries, increase first manual secondary size to at least twice that of the glow, and apply inferno (gaseous) to the manual secondaries.
Anyway you should have a lensflare looking something like this:
Then, when you have the lens flare right, go to "Node Sources" and pick the omni light as the node source. Press OK. Find a frame where the particles look good, and go to that frame in the video post renderer and render.
Then, back to the video post. Add a Lens Flare Glow. The settings for it are like:
Object ID: [whatever # you assigned the superspray]
Size: 0.2
Set glow color to "pixel", the color is something that will make it look better, like yellow, orange, blue, etc. If you really feel like it, you can use a gradient http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/explore2/smile.gif
The video post thingy should look like this:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/explore2/vpglow3.jpg
Remember, what you call the lensflare and the SuperSpray glow can be anything you want.
By the way, render the image:
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/explore2/example2.jpg
For the explosion you first saw in the beginning, I added two more particle sprays and glowed them. Anyway, I hoped you enjoyed doing this, for it is TFRAkira213's first tutorial.

Using the Vanishing Point Filter to Mock up a Business Card
There are many instances when you will want to simulate or mock up how a design would look printed out and photographed. It might be for a portfolio piece, it might be for a client to help them imagine a concept design or it might just be for your own satisfaction at seeing how your work is going to look to the end user.
In this technique we'll use a bit of perspective and the very useful Vanishing Point filter to achieve some great results. I will apply this technique to Collis' Sample Calling Card from a previous tutorial. Step 1
First we choose something to be our background for the work. In my case, I chose a wooden table I have in my office. After that get a business card or a square piece of paper to use as reference and take a picture. Without moving the camera, get rid of the piece of paper and take another picture.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/psdtuts/25_BusinessCardBackground/psdt2_s1.jpg
Step 2
Now let's create our Perspective Plane using the Vanishing Point filter (Filters>Vanishing Point). A new window will open with the filter's settings.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/psdtuts/25_BusinessCardBackground/psdt2_s2.jpg
Step 3
Select the Create Plane Tool (C) and start creating a box using the business card as reference. After that, just resize the plane.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/psdtuts/25_BusinessCardBackground/psdt2_s3.jpg
Step 4
With our plane done, now lets place our card there.
Open the image you want to place on the grid, in our case it's Collis' card, and press CTRL-A to select everything and CTRL-C to copy it.
Back to our tutorials file, create a new layer and go again to the Vanishing Point filter.
Inside the filter's setting box paste the card.
Now just move it and resize it until you find the position you like.
Repeat basically the same actions and place the other side of our card.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/psdtuts/25_BusinessCardBackground/psdt2_s4.jpg
Step 5
To make our card more real we will use the Layer Styles. Lets add some Drop Shadows to the front side of the card.
Click the right button of the mouse on the layer, copy the layer style and paste it to the other side of the card's layer.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/psdtuts/25_BusinessCardBackground/psdt2_s5.jpg
Step 6
Select one of our sides, duplicate the layer and convert it to Smart Objects. Add a Gaussian Blur (Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur). (Note: if you are not using Photoshop CS3, don't worry about converting to Smart Objects.) Now just change the Blending Mode to Screen 45%.
Repeat the same steps for the other image.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/psdtuts/25_BusinessCardBackground/psdt2_s6.jpg
Step 7
Now let's organize our document. Try to use layer names that you will remember and group them in cards. After that select everything, but the guides, group them again and name it "content". Duplicate the group and convert it to Smart Objects.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/psdtuts/25_BusinessCardBackground/psdt2_s7.jpg
Step 8
You can stop here, but we'll keep going a bit further to show you how to add a depth of field effect. With our Content Smart Objected selected, select all layers.
Change the Feather Options to 80px and Anti-alias.
Create a rectangular selection like the one I did. Invert the selection (Select>Inverse).
Now Apply a Gaussian Blur again.
We will notice that this will create that distance focus effect, everything gets blurry the further away it gets from the focal point.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/psdtuts/25_BusinessCardBackground/psdt2_s8.jpg
Step 9
After that you can even apply a Diffuse Glow (Filters>Distort>Diffuse Glow) to make it look more real
http://s3.amazonaws.com/psdtuts/25_BusinessCardBackground/psdt2_s9.jpg
Conclusion
The Vanishing Point filter is definitely an amazing filter and it allows us to preview our work with more realism, and the best thing is that it's really easy to use. You could even place another texture for the table or add more objects to the scene.

Super Fly Box Maker (http://pixelmana.com/?p=31)
As our very first resource, we’re providing you with a Photoshop action/template to make “Super Fly” product boxes. These boxes can be used to advertise almost anything (not just software). This is great if you want to catch a viewers attention, and it also gives your product display a more professional look and feel. We also provide different tips on how to take it a step further and make it look even better.
What You Need
First off, download this ZIP file and extract it to your desktop:
http://www.pixelmana.com/wp-content/uploads/Mini_Pixel_Icons/zip-file.gif
Step 1a - Familiarizing Yourself With the Template
http://www.pixelmana.com/wp-content/uploads/PSTutorial5/step1a.jpg
When you first open up the “Box Maker” template in Photoshop, you’ll see two colored areas and a bunch of guide-lines. If you don’t see the guides, press “Ctrl + ;” or go to View > Show > Guides. As you may have figured out already, a picture of the front of your box will fill in the part that says “Front Graphic Goes Here,” and a picture of the side of your box will go in the part that says “Side Graphic Here.” The guides are there to help you snap your images into place as well as providing extra reference as to the different points that the action will distort the images to which I’ll explain later.
Step 1b - The Layers
http://www.pixelmana.com/wp-content/uploads/PSTutorial5/step1b.jpg
The template opens default with 6 different layers:
Background: Default background set to white
Reference: Contains reference image to help guide the user in image placement
front: Where “front” image will go. Layer must be named “front” with no capital letters.
side: Where “side” image will go. Layer must be named “side” with no capital letters.
Fold Line: Adds a fold highlight. Initially hidden but can be revealed later to add an aesthetic quality to the box.
Shading: Adds shading to the box. Initially hidden but can be revealed later to add an aesthetic quality to the box.
Step 2a - Loading the Action
http://www.pixelmana.com/wp-content/uploads/PSTutorial5/step2a.jpg
Open up your “Actions” palette (Window > Actions). Next, using the twirl out menu, go to “Load Actions” and load the Box Maker Action from above. In the “Actions” palette, you should now see a folder named “Pixel Mana,” and a “Box Maker” Action nested within it (click the twirl down arrow).
Step 2b - Using the Action
http://www.pixelmana.com/wp-content/uploads/PSTutorial5/step2b.jpg
As you might have already seen, we’ve already provided you with some test images in the “front” and “side” layers. Unhide these layers by clicking in the empty box next to the layer in the “Layers” palette (an “eye” should fill that box after you click it telling you that it’s being shown), or you can replace these images with your own. Just make sure that your images fit within the boundaries or the action will not work.
With the “Box Maker” action loaded, click on the “Box Maker” action within the “Actions” palette, then click on the “Play” button at the bottom of the “Actions” palette. You should now have a silky smooth box waiting for you. Unhide the the “Fold Line” and “Shading” layers for added effects, also, hide the “Reference” layer if you haven’t already.
Understanding the “Box Maker” Action
http://www.pixelmana.com/wp-content/uploads/PSTutorial5/before.jpg
http://www.pixelmana.com/wp-content/uploads/PSTutorial5/after.jpg
Basically what the “Box Maker” action does is it runs the “Perspective” (Edit > Transform &g
